I just got this from my cousin - even if Dr. Oz didn't say this, it still makes sense to me:
The following advice, given by Dr. Oz, makes a lot of sense and is important for all to know: The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is. While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu): 1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications). 2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat or bathe.) 3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine or Hydrogen Peroxide if you don't trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method. 4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water, or hydrogen peroxide. *Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but *blowing the nose softly once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.* 5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption. 6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm. |

I'm with Steph too, we all got the MMR (measles, mumps, ruebella) and i still had ruebella! I think it was somewhere between 9 and 12 years old? Granted
it could be the same as how they promote the Varivax for chicken pox : you can still get it, but the symptoms will be less severe. I dunno. Still not sure
about any vax that's only a month old!

I got my older dd done today because she is high risk and ends up in the hospital every year during flu season. Not sure if I will get it for the rest of us,
she has been fine with no reaction so far.

where did you get it done Krista? I didn't think we had any clinics in Kelowna yet?

I got it done at her doctors office, she was only able to get it because of her history. The whole office only got 200 shots in and over half were gone in the
first 2 days, and they were only saved for very at risk patients! They do not think they will be able to get anymore in either because I was asking if I could
get our other dd done with the next batch. She said to go wait at one of the clinics set up this next wek with the rest of kelowna!! Even if you do decide to
get it, it is not easy to get!!!

We're getting it tomorrow. I've been reading up on vaccinations, in general, for the past two years once I knew I was pregnant. Honestly, I've not
found any science-based information that causes me concern about what we use now in our vaccination schedules. I have seen the doctor youtube video and I must
note that it is put together by a very active anti-vaccination group. I figure people become doctors with their own various biases and desires to alter the way
we all think. It is frustrating when people who are linked to science and are in a position of authority seem to turn their backs on reliable studies and
proper methodology. I guess once I see four or five statements that are based on a completely falsified study (that has been revoked by the journal that
published it and where all the co-authors removed their names from it), I figure the whole video is suspect.
I really get frustrated with this because we are all trying to find good information to protect our families. I don't like fear-mongering by the media re: the flu, but I really REALLY don't like socially damaging information from anti-vaccination people implying autism, terrorists, brain-explosions, conspiracy, and so on. I've not found one link yet that actually sites anything legitimate. Yet the information keeps referencing each other so it seems like there is backing. I feel very comfortable now understanding how immunity works, how vaccinations work, and what the process is in our bodies. We can be vaccinated for items and still catch them because sometimes, for whatever reason, our body decides to not "respond" to the intruder. And since it is a non-live virus it just passes through without our body making the specified wall against it. This tends to happen about 5% of the time which is why so many of us rely on herd immunity. There are some people who just don't make the same anti-bodies, some people who just don't make the anti-bodies for a given vaccination, and some who are too young to get the shot. In all those cases we rely on our society as a whole to keep up with vaccinations so there is no pathway into our social network for a deadly disease (like polio, etc). This is why it was so freaky when measles started working its way up the Fraser Valley last year before some of our little beebs were too young to be vaccinated against the disease. We rely on our herd to keep the weaker ones safe. Holy dinah, I'll stop now! I just kinda get worked up over some things ;) |

Here are two articles I liked from Mother Jones. Especially as they have the street cred with non-conformity and the like.

My aunt sent me a good article with a lot of science based information: http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/?p=2084 and Global Tv's show 16:9 The Bigger Picture had a good
episode tonight about the H1N1, where they examined all of the "facts", it should be on their website. http://news.globaltv.com/programs/16x9/video.html?releasePID=hB2eW1xJsp_i7JcQCKV1eNeYW_dsOyEL

I waited in line for almost 3 hours at the flu clinic so DD could get both seasonal & H1N1 shots. I had made up my mind from the get go that the whole
house would get the shots. She's a perfectly happy & healthy girl & I plan on her staying that way, which was the motivator for me. I only got the
seasonal flu shot myself because I'm not high priority. I will get mine when I take her back in 4 weeks for the booster. I do believe it's a personal
choice for everyone and nobody should make you feel bad about the choice you've made. People have voiced their opinions about my DD getting it, but it was
MY choice.

I think this H1N1 is blown out of proportion, there is this flu around but its a mild flu. Unfortunately some ppl have passed but not all of those were proven
to be H1N1 yet. And those that did die from this actual flu almost all have underlying illness known to them or discovered at autopsy. I think this flu will
fizzle out. no worries.

I had to wait 3 hours start to finish as well for both H1N1 and the seasonal! Crazy... but worth it though and happy it's done until the booster.

I am actually rather annoyed with the "underlying health issue" as a reason this isn't worth thinking about. It is just that I have asthma and
that is one of the "issues" used to dismiss the deaths. My friend has MS and she commented how if she died, she would be another one listed with
"underlying issues" as if that makes it less important. Or my dad who has Parkinson's. Or my other friend with Lupus.
I mean, a whole lot of us have *something* that could be used to justify our deaths as meaningless. All in all, I have five of my seventy students out right now with H1N1. I have never had that many out at once and I have never, in my past 9 years of teaching at a university, had any of my students hospitalized by the flu. Two of my students are currently in the hospital. They'll probably be fine, but when was the last time I had 18 year olds go from classroom to hospital within a week? (never) |

I agree that the majority of people who get the H1N1 will recover fully (but not always a nice experience during the 8-10 days the average person takes to get
over it). I also agree the these 'underlying' conditions maybe contribute to these individuals getting it worse but regardless it is the H1N1 virus
that is causing the problem NOT their underlying condition. and if some of these underlying conditions aren't being discovered until autopsy what is saying
you or I don't have one that is going to contribute to us getting ill and we just don't know it yet?!
that being said I am still a very strong supporter of every person making the decision that they are most comfortable with and that may not be the same for me as it is for you. in fact it may not be the same for my best friend as it is for me but that doesn't matter, it is what each one of us is comfortable with. |
